Lemon Balm and L-Theanine in Green and Black Tea!
Quick Relief from Anxiety and Stress Without Tranquilizer Drugs
By Tiesha D. Johnson, RN, BSN
Daily stress and anxiety not only wreaks havoc with our sense of well-being, but also shortens our lives by contributing to heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive impairment.
Drug companies offer medications to treat the symptoms of anxiety, but fears of addiction and side effects cause most health conscious people to avoid them.
Fortunately, alternatives are available in the form of natural botanical extracts—one of which was shown to be as effective as a leading prescription medication.
Prescribed as a medicinal herb since ancient Greek times, lemon balm has long been known to relieve anxiety, promote sleep, and sooth agitation. Since this botanical extract cannot be patented, its beneficial effects have been completely ignored by pharmaceutical interests.
Animal studies of lemon balm have produced impressive results with regard to stress reduction. In one study, researchers gave low doses of a lemon balm extract to mice. They observed a decrease in anxiety-related behaviors when the animals were placed in an unfamiliar environment.6 In the same study, higher doses of the lemon balm extract produced analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. Most dramatically, lemon balm extracts induced sleep in mice that had been given tiny (non-sleep-inducing) doses of traditional sedative medications.
A very recent study of herbs used in traditional Lebanese medicine as sedatives demonstrated that lemon balm extracts had the ability to bind to receptors that trigger relaxation and reduce anxiety in the brain.7

Russians in Ukraine
The Law “On Languages in the Ukrainian SSR” was enacted 20 years ago, on October 28, 1989, long before the proclamation of Ukrainian national independence. Nevertheless, it marked a breakthrough of the national democratic forces and summed up long years of struggle of the Ukrainian intelligentsia against the Soviet regime. Ukrainian was proclaimed the official language: “In keeping with the Constitution of the Ukrainian SSR, the Ukrainian language shall be the official language of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.”
Ukrainian has remained the official languages over the past 20 years. It is an axiom unless one takes into account cheap political speculations and promises that, fortunately, will never become a reality (anyway, such is the opinion of sober-minded people). The editorial office of The Day has received a letter from our regular contributor Nadia Kniazev in which she writes about the anniversary of the Law “On Languages in the Ukrainian SSR.” She enclosed a letter written by Vitalia Kovalenko, a 15-year-old girl. The letter is entitled “What can I do for my native language?” This question was chosen for a poll involving The Day’s friends, young people all over Ukraine.
The anniversary of this law reminds me of Vladimir Putin and his 17 million, precisely the way the Russian prime minister described to President Barack Obama Russia’s approach to its relations with Ukraine during the US president’s working visit to the Russian Federation. He stressed that 17 million Russians live in Ukraine, and this is very important for Russia. Even as president, Putin repeatedly claimed there are 17 million Russians in Ukraine, without identifying to the source of this statistic. Still earlier in his presidency, in an interview with the popular Time magazine (December 2007), Putin declared that Ukraine’s 45-million population includes 17 million ethnic Russians, and that 80 percent regarded Russian as their mother tongue. I called Putin’s statistic into question and compared it with the official statistics.

Eat Fat With Tomatoes to Absorb All the Nutrients
Tomatoes are a good source of the antioxidants lycopene and beta-carotene. But if you eat a tomato without adding a little fat, your body is unlikely to absorb all these nutrients.
Scientists recruited graduate students to eat bowls of salad greens with tomatoes and various types of salad dressings. The researchers put IV lines into the participants" veins and drew blood samples before and after they"d eaten the salads in order to get precise measurements of the absorption of nutrients.
When researchers went back and analyzed the blood samples, they realized that people who had eaten fat-free or low-fat dressings didn"t absorb the beneficial carotenoids from the salad. Only when they had eaten the oil-based dressing did they get the nutrients.

Comments:
Tomatoes have long been known for their health benefits -- courtesy of lycopene, an antioxidant carotenoid whose health benefits include reduced risk of cancer, atherosclerosis, and exercise-induced asthma, just to mention a few.
Lycopene gives tomatoes their red color, and works by fighting damaging free radicals in your body.
But there are at least a couple of caveats that you need to be aware of.
First, researchers have discovered that other chemicals in the tomatoes help to boost the effectiveness of the lycopene, so you likely will not obtain the same health effects from lycopene supplements. In general, I am opposed to taking many supplements. I believe that it is far better to consume large amounts of whole foods, as outlined in my nutrition plan, and this is no exception.
Secondly, in order to absorb its nutrients, you need to eat your tomatoes with a little bit of fat.

Making Your Own Probiotics and Enzymes
Since time began, man has preserved his food through the process of fermentation. Humans live in a symbiotic relationship with yeasts, mold and bacteria. These organisms are in everything we eat and are even in the air we breathe. Historically each region of the world is known for it"s specific fermented foods.......such as....... sauerkraut in Germany, kimchi (fermented mixed vegetables) from Korea, Kefir (a cultured milk product from the Caucus Mountains), and Japan is known for it"s miso (fermented soybeans).
The list of fermented foods goes on to include fermented teas, wine, beer, hard cider, sourdough breads, fermented grain porridges, most vegetables and fruits....and even meat and fish. Rediscovering the miracle of fermentation has become an exciting and magical adventure as I continue to try my own hand at culturing the many different foods which are amenable to this process. I must admit however, that the thought of fermented meat and fish has not yet tempted me.
Beneficial Chemical Changes
Fermentation favorably alters the chemical nature of our food. Not only does it preserve the food but this natural process also improves its digestibility, while increasing nutrient and enzyme content.

BE VERY Careful When Replacing Missing Teeth
A dental implant is one option for replacing missing or badly diseased teeth. It is composed of an artificial root that looks like a post or screw and is covered with a dental crown.
Treatment involves the surgical placement of the implant into the jawbone, where it is allowed to fuse to the bone in a process called “osseointegration.”
Once healed, the implant acts as an anchor for an artificial replacement tooth, or crown. The crown is made to blend in with your other teeth and is permanently attached to the implant.
A typical dental implant is made of pure titanium and/or a titanium alloy.
In fact, titanium alloys are widely used in both medicine and dentistry, for dental implants, pacemakers, stents, orthodontal brackets, and orthopedic implants (e.g., hip, shoulder, knee, or elbow). Not only is titanium strong, but many consider it biocompatible: it forms an oxide layer when exposed to air, and this purportedly results in reduced corrosion and superior osseointegration.
So why should you reject the standard titanium metal implant?

How Large is a Petabyte?

Gizmodo.com July 8, 2009 http://gizmodo.com/5309889/how-large-is-a-petabyte
Comments:
If you"ve read my newsletter for any length of time, you know that besides
health I"m also passionate about technology in all its forms. When you look
at the breakneck speed of development of ever larger computer drives, it"s
truly Moore"s Law
in
action.
Moore"s Law, as you may remember, is a popular axiom that predicts that the
number of transistors per integrated circuit will double each year.
Two years ago we saw the introduction of the first terabyte (1,000 GB)
drive, inching us ever closer to petabyte storage, which may be as little as
another two years away.
The illustrations above are a great way to get an understanding of just how
large a petabyte really is.
Imagine a computer with a 1,000,000 GB drive!

ON THE VICE PRESIDENT"S UPCOMING TRIP
TO UKRAINE AND GEORGIA
Via Conference Call
3:04 P.M. EDT
MR. BLINKEN: Good afternoon, this is Tony Blinken. Thank you all very
much for joining the call. I know it"s a busy day, so I appreciate it. Let
me just note at the outset that as evidence of the importance we attach to
our relations with Ukraine and Georgia, the Vice President is bringing with
him a very, very strong interagency team, with senior members from the State
Department, the Defense Department, the National Security Council staff, and
the National Economic Council staff.
I thought what I"d do is I"ll give you a brief overview of the actual
schedule of the trip, some of the high points, and then talk about some of
the overarching themes, and then, of course, take any questions you have.
So let me start with the schedule.

How Alcohol Changes Your Brain
Many know that studies have suggested that alcohol in
moderation may promote heart health, and even ward off diabetes and
dementia. But fewer people know that no study has ever proved a causal
relationship between moderate drinking and lower risk of death, only that
the two often go together.
In other words, it is just as likely that moderate drinking is just
something healthy people tend to do, not something that makes people
healthy.
Dr. Tim Naimi, an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, says that, "The bottom line is there has not been a single study
done on moderate alcohol consumption and mortality outcomes that is a 'gold
standard' kind of study -- the kind of randomized controlled clinical trial
that we would be required to have in order to approve a new pharmaceutical
agent."
Alcohol has been tied to breast cancer, can lead to accidents even when
consumed in small amounts, and is linked with liver disease, cancers, heart
damage and strokes when consumed in larger amounts.
Some of the WEAKEST science we have is epidemiological observations, and
that is precisely the type of science that has been used to support that
drinking wine in moderation is healthy for you.
Additionally, to examine the effects of alcohol on the brain, researchers
examined eight men and seven women who drank alcohol through a straw while
lying in an MRI scanner.
Only 6 minutes after consuming an amount of alcohol equivalent to three
beers, changes had already taken place in their brain cells, Live Science
reports. Their brains began to run on the sugar in alcohol instead of
glucose, the normal brain food.
The concentration of substances such as creatine, which protects brain
cells, also decreased as the concentration of alcohol increased. Choline, a
component of cell membranes, was also reduced. This probably means that
alcohol triggers changes in the composition of cell membranes.

Exercise Cuts Your Cancer Risk by 40 Percent!
Men with stronger muscles from
regular weight training are up to 40 percent less likely to die from cancer,
according to new research.
The findings suggest that muscular strength is as important as staying slim
and eating healthy when it comes to protecting your body against deadly
tumors.
A team of experts tracked the lifestyles of over 8,500 men for more than two
decades. Each volunteer had regular medical check ups that included tests of
their muscular strength. The men who regularly worked out with weights and
had the highest muscle strength were between 30 percent and 40 percent less
likely to lose their life to a deadly tumor.
Even among volunteers who were overweight, regular weight training seemed to
have a protective effect, although the researchers stressed that keeping a
healthy weight was still crucial for avoiding premature death.
But they added, "In the light of these results, it is equally important to
maintain healthy muscular strength levels."

Putin To The West: Hands Off Ukraine!
Vladimir Putin, Russia's Prime Minister and former President, is not renowned for his love of literature. But on Sunday he gave Russian journalists an unexpected reading tip: the diaries of Anton Denikin, a commander in the White Army, which fought the Bolsheviks after the revolution in 1917. Ukraine,"
Russian news wires quoted Putin as saying after laying a wreath in Moscow at the grave of Denikin, who is now portrayed as a Russian patriot. "He says that no one should be allowed to interfere in relations between us; they have always been the business of Russia itself."
Putin's words are seen as the latest in an ongoing volley of pointed warnings to the West not to meddle in Ukraine, which has such close historical and cultural ties to Russia that the Kremlin considers the country firmly within its sphere of interests.
